TATA Indicom Photon+ : Review

Photon+

You gotta use it to believe it…and its true that the new tata indicom photon+/photon plus has really has got a lot of talent. This new wireless modem on the block lets you access internet at unimaginable speeds.

In this age of high speed internet access most of the Indian players were lagging far behind as compared to world standards, and in the wireless category no one brand had the confidence to stand up and be counted. All the wireless modems were more of a liability rather than being your gateway to the world of internet. I have had the experience of using four wireless broadband modems till date. Only the photon+ was anything near to appreciable.

This new kid on the block boasts of down speed of upto 3.1 Mbps and an up speed of 1.8 Mbps. Though these are more of theoretical speeds, but I have seen both down and up speeds nearing 1.0 Mbps. You can compare this even with the wireline broadband services available in the Indian market, and still find the performance of this device above par those connections.

This prodigy can really change your perception of high speed internet access. Its really no more waiting…loading…buffering…its simply awesome. When you compare the photon+ to the regular wireline broadband connection,  you would have thought that you are doing  injustice to the poor wireless device by comparing it to the giant wired connections. But as usual, Goliath went down to David. Absolutely no match. Here you go…

  • Unimaginable high speed internet access.
  • Wireless connectivity (when are we going to get rid of wires…they are such a pain)
  • Real good shopping experience (they promise to deliver within 3 days of online purchase)
  • Free usage (down+up) cap as high as 10 GB per month

But now that you are already mesmerized with the photon+, here’s some reality check…

  • Limited access outside your home city, as it has limited network coverage. Though it works on other networks while roaming, but you may not have the same high speed experience on other networks.
  • No data plans with unlimited download. Not even any night packages.
  • No rollover of unused GBs in a month. Use them or lose them, as simple as that.

The best thing that photon+ offers you is hope. It still works on the 2G network and gives you such a pleasant time browsing  the internet. We hope that it will still lead the pack once the age of 3G dawns in.

Rating: 9/10

Definitely recommended.

Updates: I got a down speed of upto 2.81 Mbps. Using torrent I have downloaded at a speed of 250 kBps. Isnt it amazing.

    Hey Aditya,

Is there any way to confirm that we will not have to change the device once 3g comes in.

  • aditya

if 3G comes in does not mean that 2G will go away…people who wanna switch to 3G may or may not have to change the device…depends on the manufacturer…for this device…its a hurray…as it is 3G compatible…it works on CDMA 3G1x technology…as tata telecom has established a 3G ready infrastructure…

  • aditya

GOOD NEWS GUYS…TODAY I SAW DOWN SPEED OF UPTO 2.32 Mbps…hurray

    Hey,
First of all its really a nice review.
Be it photon+, or Reliance netConnect. What Both lack is uniformity in its
    speed.
Many a time I have faced problem while voice talk.
Its handy and good. But still cable broadband is awesome.

Photon+ has been giving me a decent and consistent performance. And since I use a laptop, I need the luxury of wireless internet.

    Guys

I need your help educating me on this. Please help me know the difference between these wireless broadband usb modems and the one that comes in many laptops which are called builtin 3G wireless modem where generally a sim card is inserted to gain access to 3G internet.
    Can you all tell:
Are these two technologies the same? (as I am planning for a new laptop so that I can look for a built in 3g modem laptop if not)
    Are both called broadband?
then what is the difference which one is superior.

P.S: I’ve seen some LG netbooks come with built in 3G modem in it – is it better to buy a laptop with built in or are there better ways to get 3G broadband.

    thanks
    Sanjeev

The two technologies are same – inbuilt modem in a laptop and the USB wireless broadband. Both of them are broadband services.

    Pros and Cons:

USB modem is generally an additional thing which you will have to carry. But it gives you the flexibility to change the service provider if you buy a new modem.

Inbuilt modem relieves you of any hassles of carrying an additional device. But in this case you may not be able to choose the service provider. Probably laptops with this feature will come tied up with some internet service provider (ISP), and the SIM card slot would be disabled or locked up, as has been the case in the US and Japan.

As we migrate to 3G, probably we would see more CDMA technology coming in, which means no SIM cards.

Thanks Aditya, I recently had a chance to look at one of my friends new laptop from the US (thinkpad). We tried to identify the sim compartment and was surprised that we were able to remove the sim in it and we tried to insert a dubai based 3G enabled sim card which he had in his iphone but nothing happened. Guess the sim is locked or something like what you said.
Thanks once again for your reply and it is helpful. The only thing that confused me was the sim why one was using sim and the other works even without sim like the TATA’s photon.

    cheers

@Temoto speed depends on the torrent. change the network type to HSIA from CDMA or Hybrid. with HSIA i have got max down speed of 323 kBps. You can find Network Type in Tools -> Options -> Network Type

Hello all. I have photon+ usb which I want to sell as I am leaving India soon. Can you please recommend me a reasonable second-hand price – how much should I ask for? I bought it three months ago for 3500 rs as part of the signup. Thank you! Nina
