@archieindian content quality is what will finally differentiate social media from spam. There is no clear boundary. Its your perception. Social media for one strata could be spam for the other.

Yes and one must be able to engage people in communicating in order to mould their opinion. Although spam is something which keeps me circumspect about the growth of Social Media but on intelligent use..it seems far more powerful than any other media

@ArchieIndian

A very valid point! Spamming has become an integral part of the web, where communication is involved. But, there is a fundamental difference between the spam generated by emails and that on social media platforms. It is the reach that perpetrators on email have when compared to the ones in social media.

Although Coverage is a celebrated aspect of social media, it needs to be earned. There is no way one can gain access to a huge portion of the population like email lists. I agree that people can post random links on twitter, but the intrusion is not even half as much as email SPAM. Thats simply because you need to earn your followers, who then recieve these messages, and it takes time

In addition to all of this one important point needs to be considered when comparing social media to other forms of communication, that it is not just your current earning potential that is important but also your past earned trust. That is why people wont subscribe to your messages until unless you have gained their trust by proving to be responsible.

Therefore, I do admit spamming has crept its way into the portals of social media, but does not wreak damage like email SPAM. I hope that satisfies your curiosity.

Out of the 3 characteristics you mentioned about social media (Coverage, Dialogue, Collaboration) I guess Dialogue or if I could term it as "Feedback" is perhaps its USP and its biggest contribution to media too.

A new born child who comes to this world knowing nothing, only grows into an intelligent adult by way of feedback (which actions of him/her are being liked and are being deemed correct and which are not), he/she recieves from his/her family/school/society.

Great nations/societies/companies/individuals have always been receptive to feedback. Its through feedback that they learn, create and grow. Even this concept of "Social Media" or more specifically if I could say "Online Social Media", has evolved in its present form only by way of feedback of earlier generations.

I guess social media would not have existed had the days that have gone by had been of "Passive Listeners". Give me a feedback...I have given you mine (Thanks to social media, I am already feeling empowered).
