So much for Algorithm Panda !

The year started with quite a row, over dip in the quality of Google Search. From Michael Arrington to Vivek Wadhwa, there was quite a bit of negativity in the tech press towards Google Search. People talked about how Content farm and demand media were cluttering Google search results. They were not all wrong. Far too often, for certain search strings – travel related or general news, low quality content was rendered. Google’s head of Web Spam Matt Cutts promised to take needed actions. And Google did. A series of algorithm changes were made. Most prominent of which was the Panda Update. There were positive responses to the Panda Update – some of the coverage here, here and here.

How LinkedIn can become more relevant- The importance of relevance -Part 2

Everybody is after relevance. Isn’t it!!! Google just came with it’s best social effort ever, but they are still far off the mark. The Google plus story is for another day. The importance of relevance-part-1

Facebook leads the identity war on the web. Google is trying hard to win the identity war on mobile platforms through Android. Twitter is in the game too through tight iOS integration.  Overall, the scene on the identity front seems clear. Right now, we don’t have a clear winnner(Facebook is the clear leader). However, Wait. Is identity all that these companies set out to achieve? I don’t think so. What these companies have set out for is relevance. To find relevance in the zetabytes of data(blabber) created everyday on the internet is going to be huge challenge. Today, I have set out to describe one of the most important factors which will influence relevance information finding in the near future.

The Impact of Net-Neutrality on the future of Business

Over the past few months, the issue of Net-Neutrality has dominated the communications landscape of the United States. A lot has already been said by the different parties concerned and the FCC has come out with its new guidelines. I would like to draw attention to the seriousness of the issue and how it affects the future of business, especially online.

Why Microsoft should concentrate on the post touch devices?

I love Kinect. And, I hate to admit that I love it. Despite being a Microsoft basher for so long, I have suddenly found that this device will define the way we look at the future of technology. For the first time in history, Microsoft has a technological lead over other companies. It was Apple during the PC days, and it has been Google during the Internet age. This time around, it’s different.

Update : Greplin support got back to me on couple of issues I’d raised. While they say, work is ongoing on duplicate search instances of a query, and should be fixed soon, they also said in order to index multiple Gmail acc, one has to be first logged out of their primary.Have deleted the corresponding concern from this post.

The future of Smartphones and Tablets

Today I was going through a few videos of the AllThingsD conference held in 2007. Looking at Bill and Steve sharing their views and having a look at the technology which we have with us today, it can be said that lot of what these guys said then is true today (If not all). There was a lot of talk about the post PC devices by Steve and a lot of talk about how the IPhone was the future and how tablets would come into the fray.

Net Neutrality – the debate!

While the furore of Net Neutrality might not have caught up full swing, here in India (yet), it is a topic under debate in US nonetheless. First off, Net Neutrality is not a technical term. Its a general embodiment of the principle that says ‘all information flowing across the internet should be treated equally’.

My thoughts on the Tech Scene in current times – Part1- Search

I have not been writing for the last few months. Call it the writer’s block or the fact that I have been busy with many other things. However, at the same time I have been following TechCrunch, Gigaom, ReadwriteWeb, TheNextweb, BGR, Bloomberg, Slashdot, Quora, Gizmodo, Engadget, Wired and many more sites religiously. Finally, today I thought of putting down my thoughts on the current state of the tech Industry. I will try to cover one of my areas of interest in this post today.  I am not interested in writing about who is making how much revenue through advertisements and  who is going to make how much. I am more interested in how we are going to get better quality search.
