Nano isn't faring any good. After the initial hype, hoopla and record bookings, nano has proved to be a damp squib. But that's something i have heard from some of my friends who own nano. I think we need a blog reviewing nano's performance post its launch. What say Aditya?? :)

Also, with India's infrastructure in shambles, I don't find Inidian automobile boom sustainable. India should abstain from going the american way and switch to greener technologies alongside updating the infrastructure for a more sustainable future (and we can as well can earn some brownie points in the deliberations over climate issues)

Nano is not going to have any breakthrough technology...but it is going to break the cost barrier...which even the best in technology cars (read Merc, BMW, etc) could not do. It has a social cause attached to it which no other car manufacturer has ever thought of. Hail NANO!!!

India surely has the potential to become an auto export hub. Thanks to skilled english speaking cheap labour. :-)
What for me will be a challenge is the ability of the govt to provide infrastructure. Cases like Singur shudnt happen.

I feel Nano won't be the kind of success people are expecting it to be.
Exports wise I think Maruti is ahead of Tata in the small car segment.

Indian car manufacturers are coming off age. Take Mahindra for example. Mahindra's scorpio pick-up is soon going to be launched in US. Its xylo is available in countries like South Africa and Australia. India is catching up in the big cars segment also. Personally I am a fan of xylo though it looks a little grumpy. what matters is performance.

A Wall Street Journal Blog mentions that China has seen a steep rise in labour costs even in a stumbling economy. No specific mention of skilled or unskilled. <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/chinajournal/2009/07/29/labo..." target="_blank">http://blogs.wsj.com/chinajournal/2009/07/29/labo...
