FarmVille is the fastest growing online game in the world

farmville

If you are a regular on the gaming applications on Facebook, you know what Farmville is. If not, then let me tell you that Farmville is the fastest growing online game in the world. And if it continues to grow at the present rate it will beat games like Mafia Wars, Mob Wars, Texas Hold’em, Vampires to gain the world’s most popular online game title.

Farmville allows users on Facebook to connect to the app and play. The main task of the player is to become a successful farmer by ploughing land, planting seeds & growing trees, raising livestock and buying vehicles and buildings. On successfully completing a task the player gains coins or cash and energy which translates to moving up to higher levels in the game. If all this sounds stupid, funny and childish to you, just try this game once on Facebook.

“I know I’ve been writing a lot about FarmVille lately, and that’s not the only awesome game that we make here at Zynga, but right now, they deserve some love. Just last night, FarmVille hit new record highs for not only the social game industry, but online gaming as a whole. FarmVille surpassed 11 million daily active users (30 million monthly actives) making it the biggest online game in North American and quickly poising it to be the largest online game in the world.

I have to say, that I’m personally addicted to the game. I love tending to my crops, discovering new fruits and veggies to plant everyday, and making sure I’m getting back to the farm in time before they wither. Yes, I do set my timer. And were any of you fortunate enough to catch those awesome super berries over the weekend? They were only available in the market for a limited time and it was a beautiful thing.”

Lisa Chan from Zynga.com wrote this on their blog.

Zynga.com is the creator of superhit casual online games like Mafia wars, Texas hold’em, vampires, Yoville etc.

Mark Pinkus, the CEO of Zynga writes on their website- “Zynga was founded in July 2007 with the vision of connecting the world through games. Since then we’ve dedicated ourselves to making fun and social games for people to play with their friends and have become the largest developer of social games on the web in the process. Zynga games provide a platform for players to express themselves and form deep social connections with their friends. With a catalogue that ranges from casino games to role playing games, our games can be found on most social networks, and on the iPhone.”

So what is the reason for the success of most of the games by Zynga?

I feel the most important aspect of these successful games like Farmville and Mafia Wars etc is the element of reality attached to them. For eg, in Mafia Wars, you start as a Street thug in the mafia family and work your way up the ladder to become the ruling mafia family. In the process you have to involve your friends on facebook, so it becomes interactive too. Small but, very important things have been taken care like- You need to build your mafia, for that you need to have men, guns, vehicles and properties. To own all this you need to perform tasks which fetch you cash. With this cash you can buy different inventories. But that’s not all, it’s not over here. You have to protect and maintain your inventories too. Prices of inventories do not stay fixed, they increase/ decrease according to the demand and supply. So if you bought a Chainsaw gun for $12000 the first time, it will cost you maybe $13000 the next time.

All these little nuances make the games by Zynga such a hit among the people.

So, if you haven’t tried these games yet and you have ample amount of time to kill, just go ahead and play these. And yes, beware, these games are really addictive. :-)

Interesting Trivia: Zynga was named after Zinga, Mark’s (CEO of Zynga)13-year old American Bulldog who sadly passed away in late 2008. Zinga’s name came from Enzinga, the Swahili name for an African Warrior Princess

I have played Mafia Wars, and the sole reason people are addicted to it is, as Ankur rightly put it, because of the amount of realism in it. Farmhouse seems to be a lot more useful as well. The fact that users need to take care of their farms to earn brownie points, urges them to be a lot more disciplined. Although it might not directly impact lives, it does have a positive effect on the general public.

Facebook’s done a good job in coming out with a more constructive game to balance out its highly destructive Mafia Wars(I love it BTW).

I guess Zinga came out with the game and not facebook..

Zynga has done a really great job in coming up with such a good game. Ankur is right in pointing out that a lot of people will simply love because there is no violence in the game. Though Farmville seems to be based a lot on the already super-hit game Age of Empires (AOE), but Zynga has done a great job in bringing that environment in an online application.

Why there are so many people got hooked into playing these? Then there's mafia wars cheat, so farmville would have cheats very soon. :)
